What age rating is appropriate for Halo?

Published on 27 November 2024 at 18:44

Today I will be discussing one of my favourite first person shooters. Halo. The game franchise that has been running since 2001, starting with Halo: Combat Evolved and the most recent instalment brain Halo: Infinite. These games are full of awesome levels, challenging fights and a complex and investing story. The games official age rating is M (Mature), meaning it is designed for people about 16-17. This is mainly because it is a shooter game, with some alien enemies that may frighten younger viewers, and primarily, blood. So, at what age should you play Halo?

I first played Halo at age 12, after my dad, who enjoyed the game and encouraged me to give it a try. I found it challenging and fun, but not particularly scary or off putting. What we need to remember when thinking about this, is everyone is different. Some kids won't struggle, and some will ,so it's up to you to judge based on your child and what they should play. These articles aim to give you a good insight into the game and what its contents are. So onto Halo

Guns

Obviously a game with guns is going to be a worry. As a parent sending the message of "Shooting stuff is fun" is not a good idea. This is why we recommend if you plan on letting your child play Halo, you sit with them for their first few hours, to  make sure they are ok with weapons.

Blood

Here comes the main issue in any game. The violence. There is not a single game in the Halo franchise without blood, which is obviously an issue. Blood is an important part of Halo, and with the game being realistic many might struggle with it. Once again, we recommend sitting with your child and making sure they can cope with it.

Alien Enemies

The enemies in Halo are most of the time aliens, (Images attached), which can be presented as a scary factor to the games. This shouldn't be an issue for most kids, but if you know they struggle with monsters, this may not be the game for them. Once again, sit with your child, see how they cope.

Multi Player Mode

So, what is multi player mode? Multi player mode means playing with and against other real living players like yourself, meaning you will be playing against proper enemies not just the regular aliens. This brings a completely new aspect to the game. It introduces chatting to random people. Don’t worry, though; this can be easily disabled. However with real people, the game becomes a lot more difficult. If a child sometimes struggles with anger towards games, multiplayer mode will easily frustrate them. This mode is full of  very good players that amateur players will really struggle to play against.

Our Rating

So, what's our conclusion? We believe that Halo is appropriate for a mature 13-year-old, but if they struggle with monsters or blood, it might be best to wait until they are around 15
